Todoist Comms is currently in active development, and you’re one of the small group of teams trying it out before a wider release. Your feedback will help us shape and improve the product. This article covers what to expect, the limitations we know about, how we handle your data, and what happens when the alpha ends.

What to expect during the alpha

| Platform | Availability |

| iOS | Available through TestFlight |
| Android | Available through Google Play testing |
| Linux | Available to download from the user dropdown |
What an alpha means
Todoist Comms is still in development, so things change often and you’ll run into rough edges. We may add, change, or remove features while we work out what belongs in the product. Your feedback during this period shapes what Todoist Comms becomes.
A few things worth knowing before you start:
- Some features you would expect from a finished team communication app aren’t built yet
- The apps update frequently, so the interface may shift between phases
- We recommend keeping anything you can’t afford to lose somewhere other than Todoist Comms
Known limitations
What you can attach
Todoist Comms accepts a wide range of file types, but some common formats aren’t on the list yet:
| Not supported yet | Supported |
|---|---|
| WebP, HEIC, SVG, TIFF, BMP | PNG, JPG, GIF |
| Any audio format | MP4 and MOV video |
| .doc and .ppt | .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .xls, PDF |
| .rar, .7z, .tar | .zip and .gz |
Length and size limits
| Item | Limit |
|---|---|
| Thread title | 300 characters |
| Group conversation title | 120 characters |
| Channel name | 80 characters |
| Group description | 255 characters |
| Reactions on a single message | 18 |
| People added to a channel or conversation at once | 100 |
| Search results per page | 100 |
What isn’t built yet
- The
has:mentionsearch filter isn’t supported yet. To find messages that mention you, use the mentions filter instead. - Sorting search results works in workspace search, but not inside a single thread or conversation.
- A one-to-one conversation can’t become a group. Start a new group conversation instead.
- Guests only see channels they’re added to, including public ones.
- Concluded threads and archived channels can’t take new messages until they’re reopened or unarchived. Replying to a concluded thread reopens it automatically.
- File preview in the browser covers text, Markdown, and code files up to 256 KB. Other files download instead.
- Long messages arrive as a notification without the text. The full message is in the app.
Known issues we’re working on
- Video attachments over 100 MB or longer than about a minute can fail to attach
- A saved thread may not appear in Saved
- Searching from the sidebar may not find existing conversations until the sidebar finishes loading
How your data is handled
Where your messages live
Todoist Comms runs on Todoist’s own infrastructure. Messages and files are stored separately from Todoist tasks and from Twist, on databases and storage dedicated to Todoist Comms. Files you attach are kept in private storage and served over links that expire, so an attachment link can’t be shared outside your workspace and stay valid.
For how Todoist handles your data in general, see our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. Those documents govern Todoist Comms during the alpha.
What happens when you delete something
| What you delete | What happens |
|---|---|
| Your own message | Hidden from the conversation. The message isn’t erased from our systems. |
| A thread, channel, or conversation | Permanently deleted, along with its messages and attachments |
| Your workspace | Permanently deleted, including every message, thread, and attached file |
In a direct or group conversation, only the person who sent a message can delete it. In a thread, the person who wrote a comment and workspace admins can both delete it.
Closing your Todoist account doesn’t remove messages you’ve already posted in a shared workspace. Those stay visible to the other members until the workspace, channel, thread, or conversation containing them is deleted.
Export your data
Todoist Comms doesn’t offer a data export during the alpha. If you need a copy of something, save it before the workspace is deleted.
What happens when the alpha ends
Todoist Comms is free to use during the alpha. Your messages stay in your Todoist workspace, and we’ll let you know before anything changes about your access. If you have questions about what happens to your workspace after the alpha, get in touch and we’ll answer directly.
