The slightest visual glitch or two-second delay can quickly affect your productivity in Todoist. If you’re experiencing slowness, flickering, or any other performance-related issue with the desktop apps, follow the steps in this guide.

Use the latest version of Todoist

Version updates may include fixes and improvements to Todoist features. Here’s how to update the desktop apps to the latest version:

If you've installed Todoist for macOS from the Downloads page, and there's a new version, you’ll see an orange notification dot on your Todoist avatar. When you click your avatar, you'll see a green line in the app menu to restart Todoist and update automatically.

If you installed Todoist from the Mac App Store, it handles all the updates for you. Here's how to manually update the app.

If you need to fully uninstall the app before updating to the latest version, follow these steps.

Update your operating system

Similar to Todoist, new versions of your operating system may include feature improvements, security fixes, and more.

Check the system requirements to see if you're using the minimum required version to run Todoist for macOS. If it's an older version, follow these instructions to update macOS to the latest version.

Log out and log back in to Todoist

Log out of the Todoist desktop app to remove outdated or corrupted website elements, including cache or cookies. Then, log back in and see if performance improves when using the app.

Clear application data

If you’re seeing visual issues or are having trouble logging in to Todoist, here’s how to clear application data to remove any cached pages or scripts:

  1. Open Todoist for macOS.
  2. Click Todoist in the main menu at the top-left.
  3. Select Clear application data.

Todoist for macOS will restart and the login page will appear.

Disable hardware acceleration

If you’re seeing visual glitches in the desktop apps, you can disable hardware acceleration to see if it improves performance. This is especially helpful when using Todoist for Linux if the app isn’t able to utilize the video card properly. You may, however, notice how in-app animations are not as sharp as they were before.

  1. Open Todoist for macOS.
  2. Click Help in the main app menu.
  3. Hover your cursor over Troubleshooting.
  4. Select Disable hardware acceleration and restart.
