Troubleshoot Google Calendar integration issues in Todoist

Are your tasks not syncing to Google Calendar, or are calendar events not appearing in Todoist? When the Google Calendar integration isn't working as intended, it can disrupt your productivity workflow. Follow these step-by-step troubleshooting instructions to verify your settings, reset your connection, and get your tasks and events syncing smoothly.

Quick tip

Before you begin troubleshooting, make sure you've properly set up the Google Calendar integration.

Tasks aren't appearing on Google Calendar

When you use the Calendar integration, tasks sync to a separate Todoist calendar in Google Calendar. If your tasks aren't showing up, follow these steps to make the calendar visible and verify your sync settings.

Make the Todoist calendar visible

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Look for the Todoist calendar in the left sidebar under My calendars.
  3. Select the Todoist calendar to make it visible.

Verify task sync criteria

All tasks that match the following criteria will sync as events:

  • Tasks in your non-shared projects or tasks assigned to you in your shared projects.
  • Tasks with a date and time (or date, time, and duration).
  • Tasks with a date (if you have Sync all-day tasks enabled in Settings > Calendars).
  • Tasks that aren't deleted.

Note

Projects in a team workspace are counted as non-shared if there are no other people in the project. Tasks in these projects will sync to your calendar even if not assigned to anyone.

Reset the Todoist calendar

If an eligible task still fails to sync:

  1. Open Todoist in a web browser.

  2. Click your avatar.

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Calendars.

  5. Turn off Sync tasks to calendar.

  6. Turn on Sync tasks to calendar.

Completed recurring tasks not showing as completed on Google Calendar

This is by design. If you complete an occurrence of a recurring task, the event stays on the calendar and doesn't get a checkmark. The event will only get a checkmark if you complete the task forever.

Tasks created in Google Calendar aren't showing up in Todoist

The integration doesn't support Google Calendar tasks. To have your Google Calendar content sync to Todoist, create an event instead.

Adding new events to the Todoist calendar won't create new tasks in Todoist. The integration only syncs changes to events linked to existing tasks. To create new tasks quickly when looking at Google Calendar, use the global Quick Add keyboard shortcut.

Sync delay for Google Calendar events

If Google Calendar events are taking a long time to appear in Todoist, try clearing the app local data:

  1. Click your avatar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select General
  4. Select Reload under Clear local data.

If you're still missing events, disconnect and reconnect the calendar integration:

  1. Click your avatar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open the Calendars tab.
  4. Click Disconnect.
  5. Click Connect Google Calendar and follow the setup process again.

Duplicate calendars appearing on macOS

If you're seeing duplicate calendars in the macOS app, follow these steps:

  1. Open Todoist in a web browser.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Calendars.
  3. Turn off Sync Tasks to Calendar.
  4. Open the Calendar app on macOS.
  5. Click Calendar in the menu bar.
  6. Select Settings.
  7. Click the Accounts tab.
  8. Remove any duplicate Google Calendar accounts.
  9. Return to Todoist and turn on Sync Tasks to Calendar again.
  10. Restart the Calendar app.

Adding multiple Google Calendar accounts

You can only sync Todoist to one Google Calendar account. As a workaround, you can subscribe to other calendars, even if they’re from other calendar apps or different Google accounts, so that their events will show up in your calendar. These events will then sync to Todoist.

Google Calendar integration keeps disconnecting

If you're working in a company with strict security policies, some IT software might block the integration with Todoist if the tool isn't whitelisted by your employer. This would cause the integration to repeatedly disconnect.

Reach out to your IT team and ask them to whitelist Todoist as a safe tool to resolve your issue.
